What You Can Learn From My Year of Highs and Lows

September 6, 2024 By ashley Leave a Comment

In July 2023, I was in the best shape I’d been in for years. I’d built muscle, reduced body fat, and was starting to see a six-pack! Even better, I felt great—no aches, no pains, and my facial skin had cleared up from long-standing redness.

Then came August. I developed tendinitis in my right bicep tendon from overtraining. I knew I needed rest, so I took a break, went on vacation, and trained lightly at the resort gym. But when I returned to the UK, things didn’t get much better. The pain persisted, forcing me to stop weight training altogether. I shifted my focus to only training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but the injury still held me back.

To make things more challenging, life took over in a way I couldn’t control. My mother-in-law was diagnosed with terminal cancer and passed away in January 2024. Then, just four months later, my own mum suffered her third stroke and passed away just a few days later.

These events made me pause and reflect. Soon after, my wife and I decided we needed a fresh start, so we decided to move house. The process of selling, decluttering, and redecorating, while also searching for a house to move to was intense. Late nights, early mornings—it was a whirlwind. But we got through it, and here I am, with a fresh start but a body that needs some care.

Getting Back on Track

Right now, my body isn’t where I want it to be. My elbow is still a problem, my back feels stiff, my hip hurts when I walk, my knees ache, and my shoulders are tight. It’s easy to let life’s chaos become an excuse, but at the end of the day, it’s about how quickly we get back on track.

I like to think of progress as a train moving toward its destination— your goal. If the train has enough momentum, it can smash through obstacles. But if it’s light or moving slowly, even small setbacks can derail it.

So, how has your year been? Have you struggled to reach your goals? If so, don’t worry— there’s always a way to get back on track.

What’s Next?

If you’re ready to move forward, the first step is knowing where you’re going.

Step 1: Set short-term and long-term goals.

For me, my short-term goal is simple: move without pain. But to make it specific, here’s what I want to achieve:

  • No more elbow tendon pain
  • Walk without pain in my back, hip, or buttock
  • Get off the floor without knee pain
  • Stand up effortlessly, feeling light
  • Hang from a bar without my shoulders feeling unstable

To reach these goals, I need to improve flexibility and strength. I’ll start by tracking my current abilities—taking photos and videos to measure my flexibility, and tracking how easy or hard it is to perform basic movements, like getting off the floor or lifting weights.

Step 2: Plan for long-term success.

My long-term goal is to increase strength and size while reducing body fat, improving my fitness for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I want to start competing again in the 82.3kg category (I’m currently close to 90kg).

Where Are You Now?

Now it’s your turn. What are your short-term goals? What can you measure today to track your progress tomorrow?

Once you’ve set your goals and baseline measurements, ask yourself: what steps will help you move forward? And how can you keep your train moving to avoid losing momentum?

Final Thoughts

Soon, I’ll be settling into my new home with more space to train. Even if I start with just 5 minutes a day, I’ll build up to 10, 15, and beyond. Small steps, but they’ll add up.

I want you to think like this soo. Start small and build up.

Remember, everyone faces setbacks, but it’s how we handle them that matters. Hopefully, my reflections can help you feel less alone in your own struggles and inspire you to get back on track.

Feel free to leave a comment or email me sharing your current struggles.

Let’s keep moving forward, one step at a time.

Important information about your treatments during the COVID-19 Coronavirus situation

March 19, 2020 By ashley Leave a Comment

Coronavirus

Dear customers

We are undoubtedly facing a concerning and uncertain time right now so I wanted to inform you about how this situation may affect your visits to us for appointments.

Currently, at the time of writing this post, we are open and operating business as usual. Whilst we do need to take precautions as a population, we should avoid panicking, especially if this situation is expected to last for months.

Hygiene around the facility

We have increased our efforts to maintain hygiene around the facility including frequent wiping of all surfaces with anti-bacterial sprays and wipes.

We have numerous anti-bacterial alcohol gels around the clinic for you to use as you like.

Social distancing

We are a small facility and so at any given time there are only a small number of people present which makes it easier for you to minimise contact with others.

We always do our best to minimise waiting time for your appointment which should also help reduce contact with others.

Inevitably if you are coming for an appointment you can expect to have some form of contact with your practitioner.

Cancellations

If you do feel unwell in any way during this time please do feel free to cancel your appointments until you feel better.

This will help to minimise the spread of unwated infections. We will not charge you for any cancellations but if it is possible please do give as much notice as you can.

Remote consultations

We have been advised that our insurance covers us for remote consultations and this is something that we can provide if you require it.

Due to the remote nature of the consultations it obviously means we cannot provide hands-on treatments, however we are still able to offer advice, exercise prescriptions, self care advice or anything else we would normally be able to provide that doesn’t involve hand-on techniques.

Our remote consultations can be done via Skype or telephone and they will be chargeable at our normal rate.

Do you have any other concerns?

If there is anything at all that you are concerned about over the coming weeks please feel free to send us an email or give us a call. We are always happy to help in any way we can.

Stay healthy,

Ashley

I went to see Ashley with a bad back that left me unable to run, train or even walk properly. His help and treatments have very quickly got me back to normal and he's given me a lot of great advice and guidance for maintaining my fitness long term. I've met a few of the team there and everyone is very friendly, welcoming and professional. It's a great setup and I couldn't recommend him more highly.

Really enjoyed training with Ashley – I'd barely set foot inside a gym before but over 6-8 weeks he taught me a variety of exercises for the whole body and gave me the confidence to train on my own, as well as offering nutritional advice and helping me work to improve a knee problem. Everyone at Precision Wellbeing is friendly and welcoming too, and it's a really nice space to exercise in. Thanks!

Could not recommend the services offered by Precision Wellbeing Group more; I read some of the other great reviews on here before booking an appointment, and if anything the service I received exceeded my expectations. I saw Ashley for an initial consultation and then several follow-up sessions for muscle pain in my back; I was able to book my first consultation same day, and was able to book flexibly around my work schedule for all subsequent appointments. Ashley was extremely professional and highly knowledgeable, with a friendly conversational manner that helped to put me at ease at a time when I was suffering from quite a lot of pain. From the first appointment I noticed an improvement, but I was also impressed by how thorough the assessment and follow-up process was; it really helped me to feel more relaxed and reassured about my recovery. I've really noticed how both the treatment/exercises during sessions and recommendations for home have helped significantly with my back. I also feel skilled up with the exercises and recommendations I need to build my strength up and avoid re-injury moving forward. Overall, a great service that I would recommend to anyone.

Highly recommend. Michael has been absolutely superb. I have been seeing him due to a prolapsed disc and sciatica down my left leg. I have seen many back specialists in the past and have to say Michael is up there with the best. Very learned, very educated and informative and a pleasure to be around

I couldn't turn my head left or right for 2 weeks. One session with Ashley and my mobility is back, I understand where the issue originated and what postural/habit changes I need to make. I'm sending all my friends to him - thank you!
