Getting To The Root Causes Of Your Health Problems
In functional medicine we believe that disease has many causes and that the approach to treating one person should not be the same as treating another.
The conventional approach in medicine is to treat symptoms of disease rather than looking to treat the causes. The functional medicine approach is to investigate an individual’s history, looking at their lifestyle, predisposing factors, triggering causes and maintaining factors.
By understanding how the body is supposed to work we can look to find out what causes dysfunction. This is done through our in depth questioning, clinical examination and if necessary, diagnostic tests (stool, urine, blood or saliva).
Once we find the root cause of dysfunction we can either aim to remove the causing factor (e.g. food sensitivities, poor sleep or heavy metal toxicity) or we can add in what’s missing (e.g. vitamins and minerals, healthy gut bacteria or exercises).
What Can Functional Medicine Treat?
Unfortunately due to advertising standards we cannot name conditions and say we can treat that condition. However the most common conditions that we see in clinical practice and that functional medicine has good results with are conditions such as;
- Digestive Problems
- Thyroid Issues
- Cholesterol Concerns
- Lack of Energy
- ADHD
- Headaches
- Heavy Metal Toxicity
- Adrenal Fatigue
- Type 2 Diabetes
