Osteopathy Is A Whole Body Treatment Approach For Acute And Chronic Pain.
If you are in pain, are concerned about your structural health or simply need to be checked over, then osteopathy is a great choice for you.
In my Whetstone clinic I see people for all sorts of different reasons. The most common is because of pain.
There are two types of pain; acute pain and chronic pain.
Acute pain is when you have gone to pick something up and your back has just “gone”, when you’re out running and roll over on your ankle causing instant pain and swelling.
Chronic pain is a problem you have had for a long time, a niggle that you can’t get rid of or a postural problem following years of slouching at your desk.
The approach I take will depend on what you have done, but the aim will always be to get you walking out of the clinic in less pain than when you walked in.
How Will An Osteopath Benefit Me?
When you are in pain you want to be confident that whoever you give your trust to to let them treat you that you are going to be in safe hands.
During your consultartion I will be able to understand the mechanism of your injury and what it is doing to your body when you present to see me. I will then assess you and treat you in the most appropriate way to allow you to get better movement and a reduction in pain.
The most common conditions I see include;
- Muscular Tension
- Persistent Pain
- Disc Injuries/ “Slipped Discs”
- Trapped Nerves such as Sciatic Pain
- Sports Injuries
- Running Injuries
- Headaches
- Postural Problems
- Arthritic Pain
The conditions listed above are just a handful of things that an osteopathic practitioner may deal with. The aim of an osteopath is not just to treat the symptoms of the problem, but to find the cause of the problem too.
If you are suffering from pain and you are looking for some form of relief then I may be able to help you, so give me a call to discuss your issue and I will let you know the best course of action for you to take.
What Is An Osteopath?
Essentially, an osteopath is a specialist in the structural aspects of the human body.
Osteopaths undergo a 4 year full time medical study covering all aspects from, anatomy and physiology to pharmacology and pathology.
When an osteopath graduates they are competent in recognising what is safe to treat and what is not and your osteopath will know when further investigation is needed.
An osteopath can help you with various conditions and help you to improve your overall physical health, including:
- Improving the mobility and overall flexibility of the body’s joints
- Remove and relieve tension that is held in the muscles
- Increasing the blood supply to the tissues in your body
- Helping the body to heal itself, naturally
What Does An Osteopath Do To Treat Me?
The techniques and equipment osteopaths use varies throughout the profession. Here in my Whetstone clinic I use a very structural approach, using hands on techniques such as;
- Osteopathic Massage
- Joint Mobilisations
- Muscle and Joint Stretches
- Joint Manipulations
- Rock Taping
The techniques I choose to use to treat you will depend on what your body needs or will respond best to at that time.
If you’re in absolute agony, the last thing I will do is strong deep tissue massage work because it would probably make you worse for example.
Some people don’t like the idea of manipulations (clicking), so to me there is no point trying to convince someone to have it done because it will only make that person tense up and become anxious about what’s about to happen, so in situations like that I simply wouldn’t do it.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
The number of sessions you need will depend on your problem and how long you have had it. By the end of your initial consultation I will tell you how many sessions you are likely going to need based on my experience and clinical judgement.
One session is never enough to fix anyone. I am not miracle worker, so don’t expect to be out of pain and back to 100% in one session. Based on my experience, you will need a consultation and at least one follow up appointment – this will be dependant on your particular condition as well as the feedback you can give me after your sessions.
Please be advised that I recommend when you should come back for a follow up appointment based on my clinical skill and experience. If you do not follow the advice I give your, your recovery may be affected.
How Much Do Osteopathy Sessions Cost?
Your first appointment is £120.
Your first appointment lasts 1 hour and includes a full medical history, assessment and treatment.
Follow Up appointments are £55.
Follow Up appointments involve a short catch up followed by re-assessment and treatment.
